Everyone understands how to bet a football game, but many people do not understand how the odds work on a major league baseball game. We have thrown together a set of guidelines that will help you understand the rules revolving baseball wagering along with some links to great online sportsbooks where you can place bets. First off, baseball is usually bet using a "Moneyline" wager, not a point or run spread. However some sportsbooks do offer a point spread option as you will see below. When you make a moneyline wager, the team you pick only has to win. It doesn't matter how much they win by. Let's look at an example of a typical game odds Pittsburgh Pirates -125 The team with the negative number is the favorite to win the game. And don't ask us why, but everything seems to revolve around the magic number of $100 If the player liked the favorite (Pirates) to win, he/she would have to bet $125 to win $100. If the player liked the underdog, (Cubs) he/she could win $145 with a bet of $100
Another type of baseball bet is the Over/Under or Total Wager On a Total Wager (over/under), you are wagering on the total runs of the game by both teams, extra innings included.
Phillies over 8.5 (-125) A player could choose one of two over/under wagers on this matchup: Wagering on the Over 8 1/2 -125. If the total runs of both teams combined are more than 8 1/2, then the player laid $125.00 to win $100.00. Wagering on the Under 8 1/2 +105. If the total runs of both teams combined are less than 8 1/2, then the player who bet $100.00 wins $105.00. Run Line Wagers These type of wagers are pretty advanced. They combine the moneyline with a point spread. The team you pick must win and cover to win the wager if you pick the favorite. If you take the underdog and lose but cover, you still win the wager just like in fotball.. As an Example A player could choose one of two Run Line Wagers on this matchup. Wagering on the Bue Jays -1 1/2 +130. If the Blue Jays win by 3 runs or more, then the player who bet $100.00 wins $130.00. Wagering on the Royals +1 1/2 -150. If the Royals win the game or lose by less than 3 runs , then the player laid $150.00 to win $100.00. General Baseball Betting Rules Winners and losers are official after 5 innings of play unless the home
team is leading after 4 1/2 innings. If a game is called or suspended, the winner is determined by the score
after the last full inning (unless the home team scores to tie, or takes
the lead in the bottom half of the inning, in which case the winner is
determined by the score at the time the game is called). Monies will be
refunded if the home team ties the game and it is then suspended. When wagering on total runs (over/under) the game must go 9 innings (8 1/2 if the home team is ahead) to have action.
