One thing the Belmont does have over the Derby is that it is the oldest of the three Triple Crown events. The Belmont predates the Preakness by six years, the Kentucky Derby by eight. The first running of the Belmont Stakes was in 1867 at Jerome Park, on, believe it or not, a Thursday. At a mile and five furlongs, the conditions included an entry fee of $200, half forfeit with $1,500 added. Furthermore, not only is the Belmont the oldest Triple Crown race, but it is the fourth oldest race overall in North America. The Phoenix Stakes, now run in the fall at Keeneland as the Phoenix Breeders' Cup, was first run in 1831. The Queen's Plate in Canada made its debut in 1860, while the Travers in Saratoga opened in 1864. However, since there were gaps in sequence for the Travers, the Belmont is third only to the Phoenix and Queen's Plate in total runnings.

Because of its distance and status as the race that can make or break a Triple Crown champion, the Belmont Stakes has been the venue for some of the most famous moments in American racing. There was Count Fleet destroying two nondescript rivals by 25 lengths in the 1943 renewal; Secretariat one-upping his fellow Triple Crown victor 30 years later, winning by 31 lengths in record time; and there was Affirmed and Alydar, slugging away at each other for nearly a mile before Affirmed prevailed to become a Triple Crown winner in 1978. The purse for the first running of the Belmont was $1,500 added with a total purse of $2,500. The winner's share that year taken by Francis Morris' filly Ruthless. The lowest winner's share in the history of the Belmont Stakes was the $1,825 earned by The Finn in the 1915 running. The 1992 edition of the Belmont was the richest running with a total purse of $1,764,800.

Secretariat's 1973 Belmont Stakes victory still stands as the track and world record for the mile and one-half distance at 2:24. The second-fastest clocking is shared by Easy Goer (1989) and A. P. Indy (1992) at 2:26, while Risen Star (1988) and Point Given (2001) hold the fourth-fastest time at 2:26 2/5.

What is really cool about the Belmont is that it either builds creates history or can be a huge letdown for the triple crown. The Triple Crown events in Thoroughbred racing are the Kentucky Derby (first Saturday of May), the Preakness Stakes (third Saturday of May), and the Belmont Stakes (2nd Saturday of June). Long an imaginary title, the Triple Crown was given official status in 1987, when the three tracks created the Triple Crown Challenge, with a $5 million bonus to any horse that won the Triple Crown. If no horse won all three races, a $1 million bonus was awarded to the horse with the best overall record.
