Luck
is all it's about
Fantasy Baseball vs. Fantasy Football
What is wrong with Fantasy Football? A whole lot, but let's stick
with the fundamental problem. There is no strategy. It's 90% luck.
We are not saying it's not fun, but compared to
fantasy baseball, it ranks second fiddle in terms of pure skill needed to win.
Why is it luck? Here are some reasons, and how it differs from
fantasy baseball:
Football: Injuries have a more immediate and lasting impact because
of the short season. It's all luck. Sometimes you stay healthy
all year, sometimes you get screwed.
Baseball: Injuries generally don't affect the overall
seasons numbers, because of the length of the season. And as a
rule, baseball injuries tend to even themselfs out among owners
Football: Play calling is too unpredictable, and you guy could
get screwed. For example, your running back is on the 1 yard line,
ready to score and the offense decides to call a tackle eligible
and throws a pass to some
fat, steroid laced lineman. Or how about your QB's team jumps
out to a big lead and they decide to play "ball control"
the second half, killing his passing stats.
Baseball: You know your player is going to get his
4-5 at bats every game. The manager is not going to pinch hit
for his cleanup guy to try some cute strategy.
Football: The draft is boring as hell. Gee, I wonder what position
the first 8 guys will draft. Hmmmm...running back maybe?
Baseball: The draft rocks. It is always unpredictable
and their are a million different startegies for owners to imploy
Football: Bye weeks. What is this nonsense!?! In a short season,
the last thing you need is to go head into a game with 2-3 key
players on a bye week. Once again it's all luck. Maybe you
face a tough team who has a lot of guys on bye, or maybe you face
an an easy team with all your guys on bye, and lose....it's ridiculous.
Yeah, we know...some will claim they plan for this when they draft.
We doubt it. The best most owners can do is see it coming a few
weeks ahead and maybe get lucky on the free agent wire to avoid
disaster.
Baseball: Baseball does have rain outs, but those
games are usually made up. Once again, over 162 games, this makes
little difference.
Football: Crazy scoring. This vares league to league of course,
but leagues that give extra points based on how long a touchdown
is?!? Give us a break! You are adding more luck into a game that
is already based solely on luck.
Baseball: Categories vary league to league.....
but it's pure stats baby.... not luck.
Football: Less thinking involved. This is a good thing for a lot
of people. Check out your typical office leagues. It's not uncommon
to find woman or very casual sports fans taking part in these
league
because it doesnt involve a lot of time. Plus, people who know
little about the NFL often compete quite nicely in fantasy football
leagues, because its luck.
Baseball: Very time cosuming. Not for the faint
of heart. Leagues with day-to-day transactions are a killer.
